Scuba Chic
February 14, 2012Come on in – the water’s fine. That’s the message from the runways of New York’s fashion week as sporty SCUBA-chic flooded the resort 2012 collections. From neon color-block dresses and body hugging one-pieces to neoprene bikinis (Michael Kors calls his offering “The Scubini”) the wetsuit-inspired trend is the last word in vacation-wear. The look is part Bond girl (who could forget Halle Berry’s orange bikini in “Die Another Day”?), part 60’s Mod, and it telegraphs style, athleticism and all-around fun. So make a splash … ready, set, shop!
W Magazine is mad for Kors’ sophisticated swim/dresses, perfect for beachside cocktails, while Elle loves Karl Lagerfeld’s cobalt blue body suits. Young designers have also dived in, including Derek Lam, Jason Wu, Lisa Marie Fernandez and Alex Chang – some even sent their models down the catwalk with wet slicked-back hair for a fresh-from-the-ocean look. And for the more casual jetsetter, Havianas, the Brazilian flip flop fashion darling, has a new collection of slip-ons imprinted with bright orange scuba graphics. Toss them in an adorable neoprene beach tote by Osklen, available at Escape at The Cove, and you’re good to go.
What we love best about SCUBA Chic is that it’s stylish AND wearable, whether lounging by the pool or in the water. Form meets function when it comes to Lisa Marie Fernandez’s fabulous neoprene bikinis, also at Escape. Fernandez is an avid paddle boarder and designed her saucy line to be wearable and wicked. Mission accomplished: heads will turn. So go Scuba sporty: you’ll look and feel fabulous, and nothing’s more chic than that.
