Mad Men on the Beach
February 14, 2012In case you hadn’t noticed (though we’re pretty sure you have) the mod look and feel of AMC’s cult hit Mad Men has burrowed its way pretty deeply into our cultural and fashion consciousness—so far, in fact, that Banana Republic even launched a line of men’s and women’s clothes based on the show. But the style of the ’60s isn’t just for the boardroom and the secretarial pool anymore. These days it’s on surfboards and in swimming pools, too.
Everywhere we went this summer, we saw retro-cool men’s swim trunks that wouldn’t have seemed out of place on one of Don Draper’s Technicolored jet-setting jaunts to Palm Springs. The look is all about a slightly short, slightly narrow leg, a snap or drawstring (or maybe both) and throwback patterns like muted plaids and simple seersuckers. A solid suit trimmed out with piping in a contrasting color works just as well.
It’s a vibe we’re continuing to notice all over The Cove this winter, from the stock in our shop, ESCAPE, to the outdoor gaming tables and cabanas by the pool at Cain. Pair it with a button-front short-sleeve collared shirt, a sleek straw Panama hat, and you’re good to go. Mid-day Manhattan—made with Draper-favorite Canadian Club whiskey—entirely optional (but recommended).
